This summer, I have had the incredible pleasure of sitting in with just about the greatest bunch of guys I have yet come across, Todd Adelman and The Love Handles. Todd writes like the bastard child of Tom Waits and Gram Parsons with a little Stephen Stills thrown in for good measure. His band, The Love Handles, features the incomparable Greg Shochet on guitar and mandolin, and the all too fine Bret Billings on pedal steel (both borrowed from Halden Wofford's Hi- Beams).

Yours truly gets to be the girl singer. As most of you know I am a flat out whore for good harmony. When I was eleven, I wrote a very earnest (and poorly spelled) letter to Tom Petty letting him know that I was available to be his back up singer at a moment's notice (sixth grade be damned). Needless to say, I never received a reply (I don't hold it against him), but now I get to put my own guitar aside and do what I love most, sing. I haven't yet brought out the red sequined dress and paper fan, but it could happen!

I. SALUTATIONS
October 3, 2007
Hello lovelies!
I am typing this from the Best Western in Dubuque, IA where Jenny and I spent the night after performing at Isabella’s. After a long day of steam and rain, morning arrived clear and cool across this river city. The tour has been pure joy to date, as we’ve been able to drive the midwest on some smaller, two lanes roads instead of the interstate. 183 north from Hays, KS to Elm Creek, NE put on a beautiful Kansas display with white charolais cattle pastures, slow nodding oil pumps, and great herds of antelope. Outside of Alma, Nebraska, at Harlan County Lake, we drove across a native wetlands restoration area dotted with snowy egrets and blue herons. It’s fantastic to see individual towns doing what they can to restore the natural order of things. It bodes well for both the indigenous wildlife and the midwest water table.

We’ll be in Fort Atkinson, WI this evening at Cafe Carpe (a show added after the last e-newsletter) and then on towards the heart of the midwest. Chicago here we come (should I root for the Cubs after all?!?).

I hope this finds you and your loved ones very, very well. Thanks for so warmly welcoming me back out on the road. It has been such a pleasure getting to see you again!
xo

I. SALUTATIONS
September 4, 2007
Hello lovelies!
It has been a tremendously long time since my last e-newsletter (welcome to the new folks on the list!). Time moves ever forward and being in Colorado for the last year and a half has been a true joy. It’s the first time in a decade that I have watched a full cycle of seasons while standing still in a place called home. Just recently the hummingbirds (ruby throats and brilliant orange rufous) have come back through on their long journey back south from Canada to Mexico (it seems like such an extended flight for such a short vacation), which signals the true end of summer is near. We hung bird feeders this year for the first time since moving up into the mountains, somewhat against the recommendations of our friendly Ace Hardware. When you walk in the front door of the hardware store there is a cork board off to the right which proudly displays photographs of locals' experiences with backyard bird feeders and their sometimes unexpected visitors. Most photos show black bears cradling feeders tightly against their chests, like precious seeded gifts. Others show hummingbird feeders tipped up to bears lips, sugar water spilling across their great faces, eyes glazed like a kid on halloween. We have yet to add a photo to this wall of bear.

I would be lying if I said I am not excited to get back on the road, to perform, to SING! The Midwest, here I come! This is a long foray into the heart of the country and I am thrilled to perform in towns that I haven't visited now in quite a while (Minneapolis, I have missed you) as well as some to which I have never before been (Hays, KS). I've got a slew of new material and I can't wait to play them live (I have been in and out of the studio for the last week, recording a new, two song "45" for you). The extraordinary Massachusetts based singer-songwriter Jenny Goodspeed will be opening all but the last four shows. She has a new record coming out this month, Under The Ash Tree, on which I was lucky enough to get to sing. I think you're going to love her.

I hope this finds you and your loved ones, very, very well. I have missed you!
xo

I. SALUTATIONS

Hello, Lovelies! I woke up this morning to blue sky sunshine, a drop in
temperature, and a new political landscape (that is all I will say about
the election other than I am so proud of our nation for turning out to
vote in such numbers). Though the thin skin of ice that clung to the edge
of the reservoir last week is now gone, I image we are just a few days off
from its inevitable and much more stubborn return. I sense my town is
about to batten down the hatches for winter despite the innocuous looking
sky. The signs are all there: white on the Arapaoe Peaks, a house
rattling northwest wind, and the seasonal return of the exteded crow
family that has a time share in our tall lodgepole pines. I don't mind
the change this year as it bodes well for writing (much to Stella's
ball-crazed sadness).

I am thrilled to perform in my (relative) home town tomorrow night.
Tickets have been selling at an incredible pace and I feel so lucky to be
able to do this show with the Louisville Center for the Arts. Today is
the last day to be able to purchase advance tickets on-line at the
discounted price, so if you're planning on coming, I would recommend
getting them soon (http://www.bethamsel.org/louisville_main.html). You
Boson peeps know I love you, but there is nothing like performing for the
people who have been supporting this endeavor from the very first open mic
I did in 1994. Has it really been twelve years? Do you clearly remember
where you were twelve years ago? Were you still wearig tapered jeans?
Who the hell knew they would ever come back into fashion?

Welcome to all of the people who signed up for the E-Newsletter at the
performance this past Suday at Unity! You could not have made this girl
feel anymore welcome.

I will be seeing you in the new year as I get back on the road and travel
to small towns everywhere (and a few of the big ones, too). I hope this
finds you and your loved ones very well and that you have a wonderful
thanksgiving (with all of the turkey/tofu goodness and none of the family
dysfunction).

I. Salutations
Hello lovelies!
It has been quite a long spell since I have sent out an e-mailer (a year?!?). Last fall I made the decision to spend more time at home and then when winter arrived, I found myself a bit under the weather and it seemed prudent to plant some roots in my mountain town. Then there was that whole eloping thing and before I knew it, this summer was rounding the bend towards autumn.

The Aspens are turning their brittle gold and now the coniferous hillsides are punctuated by patches of impossible yellow. For three days last week, great numbers of robins passed through Nederland on their way to warmer climes along with a Stellar's Jay or two. The baby swallows under the eves at the post office have all fledged (there were three little ones in the mud nest right over the front door) and the entire flock is long gone. Our first snow fell on my birthday last saturday, fat flakes spinning horizontally from the west. Certainly an auspicious beginning to 35.

I am working with an new booking agent, Craig Conor at Broadline Booking. What this means is that I will be back on the road in the coming year, bringing The Reverie to a town near you (beginning with Laramie, WY this Saturday). I have missed you all greatly!

In other news, my annual home town show is set for Friday, November 10th at the Louisville Center for the Arts. It will be wonderful to once again play for the most supportive community I have ever known in a venue I simply adore. Advance tickets are on sale now on the bethamsel.org website (http://www.bethamsel.org/louisville_main.html) and as we're expecting the show to sell out, I recommend getting your tickets early. Thankfully it will be AFTER the midterm elections. I can't wait!

I hope this finds you and your loved ones very well and that autumn is a full of slanting light, delicata squash, and late season baseball!

The Reverie has been picked as one of Performing Songwriter Magazine's top DIY CDs in their June issue. This is a great honor and a personal thrill, for when I was first starting to write and do open mics, I would wait impatiently for every Performing Songwriter issue and then devour each page. It was glossy proof that there was a community of people in the world who felt as passionately as I did about music, especially at a time when it was becoming more and more obvious that Rolling Stone wasn't covering the artists who I most admired (don't even get me started on Spin). I'll post the review when it comes in. Here is Performing Songwriter's website:

I had the incredible pleasure of working with a new photographer in June, Briel Johnson, who runs Five Petal Design and Photo. We spent an afternoon shooting in Portland's Washington Park rose gardens before shifting gears by moving to an empty downtown industrial loft (have you been to the rose gardens?!? Sitting on stone steps, surrounded by downed wet ginko leaves, surveying the park, I felt as if I had stepped into an Ivory Merchant film). Briel is one of the most naturally talented photographers with whom I have ever crossed paths. She made me feel not only at ease, but absolutely beautiful (even when my lips were blue). Her work is now featured on the front page and will be promanant on the new tour poster and record packaging. I could not be more pleased.

This will be my first visit to this great radio station and I am excited to be able to get the chance to perform for area listeners before the show that night at Beaner's Central. Feel free to call the station that afternoon at 218-726-7181 if there is a song that you would like to hear off The Reverie. I think I will have the opportunity to perform 4 or 5 tunes before heading off for that night's sound check.

Beth Amsel - April Newsletter

I. Touching Base
II. The Reverie Now Available/CD Sale
III. Upcoming Shows on East Coast

I. Touching base
It has been quite a while since I last wrote to you, my lovely e-mail
folks. Autumn and winter turned, a presidential election (and subsequent inauguration) passed, and baseball season again commenced (with an appreciative nod to you, my Boston listeners). Have you been well? I am sitting in my new house up in Nederland, CO, looking out the back door, trying to convince my senses that today's foot of snow covering the back deck like soft wedding icing does not indicate Spring's taking the year off in 2005. It has been an adjustment, living at 8240 feet, both in terms of oxygen intake and the delayed sweet return of tender vernal green, but the view of the Indian Peaks Wilderness from where I sit is incomparable and I can't deny this is home.

II. The Reverie Now Available/CD Sale
After a few delays here and there, the new record, The Reverie, is now
available and on sale on the website (www.bethamsel.org/merch.html). A
HUGE thanks to everyone who helped make this record possible. I am so
proud of the thing and so look forward to you being able to hear it!
We're running a little sale on the website right now: Purchase The Reverie and we will include a copy of A Thousand Miles or Kindling for only another $10.00 (your choice). That's two records for only 25 bucks. Plus, if you order it off the website directly, you'll save a stamp!

III. Upcoming Shows on East Coast
A return to the East Coast is long over due and I am very excited to do a few shows in my old neck of the woods in May. The dates are limited, but I'll be back in September for a real record release tour. What can you expect to hear? Everything off the new record and quite a bit off A Thousand Miles as well (I have been neglecting that record for far too long). As I have been home writing this winter, I have been trying out new songs along the way and I do hope you'll come along for the ride.

DATES:
5/6/05: Montague, MA. The Montague Book Mill. 7:30PM 413-367-9206
call: 402-553-7014

I hope this finds you and your loved ones as well as ever and reveling in Spring's first blush (eating ice cream, plucking dandelions). Thank you, again, for making it possible for me to do what I love best. I feel very lucky to have such an incredible group of listeners!
